Large wildlife and woodland garden in the country

Gardens can be designed and developed in many ways; some may take just a few months whilst others can take several years. This large, steep garden in rural Devon is being created slowly and organically by the owners with the help of Pamela’s regular design input. This has shifted and adapted as the garden matures rather than being forced upon it from the start. There has, however, always been an overall vision and objective which is to create a woodland garden in harmony with the surrounding landscape, utilising views of the nearby hills and villages.

Dozens of native and ornamental trees and hedges were planted over ten years ago but the garden sits in a frost pocket with difficult heavy clay soil, so some have not survived. Those that have are now maturing nicely and create a framework through which grass paths twist and turn, leading you through the different areas. Carefully positioned benches enjoy views out and around the garden, looking through green archways or between branches and leaves. As the seasons change, this garden goes through amazing transformations as leaves are shed in winter or fruit trees bloom in spring. In June the garden is a blaze of colour with scrambling roses, hardy geraniums and other flowering perennials. The large vegetable garden and poly tunnel provide a practical element, though no less ornamental.
