Artist’s flower and vegetable garden

The owners of this impressive Victorian house bought it knowing the garden was going to be a long term project because they were planning to do all the building work and planting themselves. Five years on it has to work extra hard as the property is now not only a successful bed and breakfast business, but also a gallery as they are both professional artists.

The original garden had a very distinct layout created by straight lines of overgrown box hedging and ancient fruit trees. There was no connection with the house and restricted any design ideas for the new garden. Many of the old fruit trees have been identified and retained, but now most of the box hedging has been lifted and where possible reused. Most of the garden is walled offering shelter and privacy, adding to its character. Around the house are formal seating and dining areas enclosed by a low retaining wall planted with Lavender. Steps take you up to a large formal vegetable garden complete with potting shed, traditional cold frames and compost heaps.

To emphasize the structure of the garden woven willow fences and archways are used, created on site by local craftsman Jay Davey Bespoke Willow. The most recent part of the garden to be developed is the large curved lawn, edged with new fruit trees and herbaceous borders.
